Planning Portland engagement photos can sometimes be tricky with Oregon’s weather. This is why I try to encourage a studio engagement shoot whenever possible! Luckily for me, Ryan and Kylee were a dream couple who fully trusted me to help plan out their session. These two shared with me the importance of these photos. They wanted to capture this special time in a way that reflected their relationship for what it was – beautiful and full of love!
Ryan and Kylee are one of the first couples that fully gave me the reins to plan their entire engagement shoot inside and out. I had SO much fun doing this! As a photographer, I have spent a ton of time capturing engagement photos and along the way have come up with some incredible ideas. For Ryan and Kylee, there was one specific goal: to develop a concept that was different but reflected who they are as a couple. Their Portland engagement photos were going to be perfect thanks to the mood boards we created and the location ideas we came up with. We ended up settling on using Creative Cream Studio in Portland for their studio engagement shoot. Followed by their best friend’s childhood home for some unique lake engagement photos! We spent all day together, laughing, drinking, talking, and capturing their love in the most them way possible. All with a little bit of style and editorial flare paired with intimacy and gentleness.
Details behind the concept
I love, love, love mood boards!! When I meet with clients, creating a mood board is essential to help guide the engagement photoshoot. They help lead us in a specific direction that allows me to really nail the client’s style and personality all in one! With Ryan and Kylee, I spent quite some time planning out and looking through different mood boards. This kind of collaboration is what builds so much trust between my clients and me. I love hearing their thoughts and ideas and suggesting ways we can bring their vision to life! With this Portland engagement shoot, it was important to me that they played a part in the planning and style.
After establishing a solid mood board we started exploring different engagement shoot locations. After combing through all of our options we settled on two different locations. Ryan and Kylee loved the idea of using Cream Creative Studio in Portland, Oregon for a few studio engagement photos. We wanted to shoot in a place that would showcase them, but also elevate the chic vision that Kylee wanted. But, they also wanted to mix things up a bit. These two absolute icons came up with the perfect location – their best friend’s childhood home. It was not only a stunning location but sentimental as well! My favorite part was that we were able to capture some dreamy lake engagement photos.

A studio engagement shoot
If you are at all familiar with Oregon, you know the weather can be unpredictable. With cloudy skies, rain, and cold temperatures Oregon engagement photos require a lot of planning. This is why I always recommend my couples consider studio engagement photos! Studios have come a long way, you may not even realize some certain photos were taken in studios! Trust me, these photographer-favorite studios aren’t anything like your local J.C. Penny studio, they produce some stunning art!
I had a blast with Ryan and Kylee during their studio session. For starters, they are natural in front of the camera!! And they’re also so deeply in love – it’s absolutely adorable! During the first portion of their studio engagement session, we kept things casual. Both Ryan and Kylee stepped out barefoot in pale neutrals and we took some gorgeous shots against the large window as light flooded into the studio. Cream Creative Studios also has roman clay cream and ivory walls that added a textured backdrop for these two lovers. We turned up the volume on our speaker as the newly engaged couple stepped out in all-black outfits. With a bouquet of white roses, Kylee looked drop-dead gorgeous and Ryan was clearly thinking the same thing – he couldn’t take his eyes off of her! I just love how many ways Cream Creative Studio can be mixed up and changed to fit the mood, their availability of props makes it even better!
Portland’s Cream Creative Studio
Ryan and Kylee were down for anything and were open to the idea of a studio engagement shoot, so we headed to one of my favorite places, Cream Creative Studio! This dreamy space in Portland is so versatile and offers some amazing amenities, making it a go-to for me and my clients. Bonus points for the fact that Cream Creative Studio is easy to access and offers FREE street parking! They have also equipped their studio with different props, backdrops, and lighting options – they even offer some chilled beverages!
Whenever I have the opportunity to shoot here I feel as though we are in a luxury space, clients have access to full-length mirrors, clothing racks, and steamers allowing the perfect opportunity for multiple outfit changes. Portland engagement photos can feel dark and gloomy sometimes due to the weather, but, with Cream Creative Studio we can create a vibrant space!

Adventurous engagement photos by the lake
Ryan and Kylee were excited to create all day and were even willing to jump outside of the box a little bit! We turned their session into a true Oregon engagement photoshoot adventure! It’s my dream to spend quality time with my clients because I strive to do more than just take their photos. With each couple, I do my best to learn their story and connect on a deeper level, the trust we share is one of the most important parts of our relationship. The stronger the bond the more authentic the photos feel, and I am 1000% here for that!
After wrapping up their studio engagement photos we headed off to lunch where we had an amazing conversation and geared up for the next portion of their session; the dreamy lake engagement photos were on top of mind during lunch! We planned out some amazing shots and were just so ready to get started. We ended up capturing some unreal shots that I am so thrilled to share with you, but the time we spent together in this location meant so much to me. It felt as though we had all been best friends for years as we spent time drinking together, swimming, creating, and laughing the day away! I’ll have memories from this day for the rest of my life – and to me, that is what makes a shoot successful.
This lake was absolutely breathtaking.
I felt like we stepped right into a fairytale book. I mean, I don’t think you could pay for or even create lighting as incredible as the mid-day natural glow we had shining through the leaves and reflecting off of the lake! Ryan and Kylee snuggled up on the wooden dock in casually cool outfits, they were serving all the looks! I think my favorite part of this shoot was when they hopped into the vintage rowboat and ventured out to the middle of the lake – talk about a dreamboat!! I stayed on land while Ryan rowed the two of them out into the middle of the lake, I snapped some adorable pictures of the two kissing and sharing a sweet private moment together in a location that meant so much to them. Also, they were so totally serving Noah & Allie in The Notebook!! I was obsessed.
These engagement photos at the lake are different and totally Pinterest-trend-worthy! We definitely nailed Ryan and Kylee’s vision and I still am SO thankful that they trusted me through the entire process. This day was everything I could have ever wished for and more.
